Front Plate LSD Subaru STi

Subaru +PLUS front LSD with preload adjustment (using X Shift special tool) is modern type of limited slip differential. It provides maximum traction in the harshest conditions and transfers more power to track, which produces quicker acceleration!

An LSD system eliminates the uneven power distribution which tends to apply more rotational drivetrain energy to the wheel that has less grip. During aggressive driving, an LSD unit efficiently distributes the torque from the wheel with less grip capabilities to the wheel that has more, enabling more traction for the vehicle.

Why LSD?

It is clear that limited slip differential is much more usable in racing cars than standard open differential, which is good tool to increase driveability, but cannot distribute the maximum power in performance conditions or on surfaces with different adhesion on right and left wheel.

Plate LSD contains mechanism with ramps on pressure rings and cross shaft and steel plates that work as a clutch. As the car accelerates, the cross shaft is pushed to the the ramps of the pressure rings, which are forced to move outwards and push the steel plates together. With increasing pressure between plates, the friction also rises and therefore the driven gears are increasingly bind together and is more difficult for them to spin at different rates.

Plate LSD vs Torsen

Torsen differential uses gears instead of steel plates to transfer the torque on wheels. It is good solution for street driving with it's precise power distribution and stability on curvy roads. However, Torsen is not very suitable for high performance purposes, because it can't provide such aggressive torque transfer, especially under extreme conditions. As opposed, plate LSD is able to send power sharply to the wheel with grip which leads to improved traction and it's also more tunable than Torsen. Moreover, it works very fast and provides advanced handling even in the tight curves at high speeds.

Parameters

Essential influence on LSD function have ramp angles. It very depends how the angle is measured – if you measure the angle from axle axis, then the greater the angle, the stronger and more aggresive locking. There are 3 types of differential regarding ramp angles:

  • 1 way: only locks in acceleration
  • 1,5 way: ramp angle on the acceleration side is different to that on the braking side
  • 2 way: locks equally under acceleration or braking

You can choose from multiple ramp angles configurations to provide the most suitable function of LSD for your aplication.

  • 45°x20° (standard)
  • 35°x10°
  • 45°x0°

Other parameter that can be tuned is preload. It is achieved by disc spring which applies a pressure to the clutch plates – wheels are partially coupled all the time. Torque difference between wheels must overcome this baseline resistance to spin at different rates. Steel plates can wear down over time and get a little thinner over time, so it's benefitial to adjust the preload with our special Subaru LSD Preload Tool.
